Afghanistan experts share their experience
News
On 28 June 2023, ‘The Netherlands and Afghanistan 2001-2021’ programme held an Expert Meeting with academics that have researched Afghanistan. The meeting took place at NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies located in Amsterdam, with researchers from ‘The Netherlands and Afghanistan 2001-2021’ programme also present. The meeting’s main aim was to share stories and learnings from previous and current research projects.
Sharing experiences
At the start of the meeting, Thijs Bouwknegt, NIOD’s Programme Leader, gave an introduction to the programme and where it stands today. Following a short round of introductions, the first panel started with four panelists sharing their own personal and professional experiences of working in Afghanistan. After lunch two further panels took place, one led by Arthur ten Cate, NIMH’s Programme Leader, focusing on military missions in Afghanistan, and the third and final panel concentrated on sources. The day closed with some concluding remarks from Annika Schmeding, one of NIOD’s senior researchers.
The meeting consisted of animated exchanges, tough questions, and was an excellent first networking event for ‘The Netherlands and Afghanistan 2001’ programme. Conversations continued on during the reception, and will no doubt continue during the duration of the programme.
